Should Dhoni be removed as Indian captain?

Yet another ICC tournament; yet another early exit for team India. For the second year running, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men have crashed out of the T20 World Cup without winning a single game in the Super 8s.

For once, Captain Cool appeared bereft of ideas both on and off the field. The follies in the field can be pardoned but the shocking excuse of IPL parties taking a toll on his players didn't go down well with the media or the Indian cricket administrators.

A day after Dhoni's statement, a prominent newspaper carried a front page report where top sources in BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) claimed that Dhoni could be removed as the T20 and One-Day Internationals captain.

If true, is the right step? And, if so, then who should be made captain?

Mayur Lookhar spoke to a few Telly Stars to know their opinion on this saga.

Shonali Nagrani

As a captain, Dhoni's been under a lot of pressure. It's never easy captaining in all three formats o f the games. The pressure in a T20 game is more.

If you look around others team, they all have different captains for T20 and other formats of the game. Suresh Raina or Virender Sehwag should be made the T20 and ODI captain.

I don't go by Dhoni's theory that IPL parties were partly responsible for our loss. The likes of Warner, Michael Hussey partied hard too but there's no dip in their form.

Abhinav Shukla

After yet another loss at the T20 World Cup, Dhoni should be removed as T20 captain. Blaming IPL parties for the loss is not a plausible excuse. He's been captain for a while and perhaps, it's time for a change.

Unless there is change, others will simply not get their opportunity. I played a cricketer in Jersey No.10. Perhaps, I could be an adequate replacement. Jokes apart, Dhoni should make way for a new captain. Sehwag is an appropriate choice.

Nandish Sandhu

You can't fire Dhoni for erring once. Before you even think of taking such a step, you need to look into account his contribution to Indian cricket. He's the only captain to have taken us to the no.1 ranking in Tests, ODI, and T20. Sacking him after all what he's done, will be gross injustice.

As for the party thing, perhaps, I have to disagree with Dhoni here. Partying is something which is entirely in your hand. Nobody has forced you to go.

If a friend is persuading you to drink, then you should be strong enough to resist the temptation. You must deviate from what isn't good for you. Besides, you cannot control one's personal life. Cricketers are human beings too.

Karan Mehra

I haven't followed cricket much but I believe Dhoni has proved to be very good captain. We may have lost this World Cup, but remember you've also won many series under his captaincy. His aggression runs on to the younger players. He's shown them how to win.

There's merit in Dhoni's criticism of the IPL parties. You can see it on the field. The players are looking jaded. Glamour has now become part of the sport. As a captain, Dhoni has a right to his opinion. I see no reason for him to be replaced.

Kunal Verma

There shouldn't be any change in captaincy. Just because you lose one tournament doesn't mean that Dhoni should be stripped as captain. He's done well both as a captain and batsman. Dhoni alone shouldn't be singled out.

There 11 players in the team and all should be equally blamed. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh fared poorly too. Don't single out Dhoni.

Arjun Bijlani

Dhoni shouldn't be removed. Wins and losses are part of the game. You can't hold his neck for one loss. Besides, it's not Dhoni per se who is responsible for the defeat. It's the whole team who let the country down.

Indian captaincy is a demanding job. Even a Sachin Tendulkar couldn't handle the pressure and resigned appropriately. You can't strip Dhoni of the captaincy.

I won' like to comment on the IPL parties, but the tournament has done us no good. Ideally, with IPL, team India should be dominating T20 cricket. But that hasn't happened. The hunger for success is not evident. Perhaps, big money in IPL distracts our players.
