Negative word of mouth mars the flight of `Kites`

While the entire world was going gaga (rightly so) over the fact that 'Kites' was all set to take the biggest opening of the season, it was only at this column where slight apprehension around the state of affairs was first highlighted last week.

It came with a reason too rather than any element of cynicism. Yes, given the hype around the film, star power of Hrithik Roshan and obvious excitement of seeing Barbara Mori on screen, 'Kites' was always all set to be a big summer outing. However, too many cooks in case of 'Kites' did make one fear if the dish would be spoiled, case in point being 'Trimurti' which was mentioned in last week's column.

It was a decade and a half ago that Subhash Ghai, Mukul S Anand and Shah Rukh Khan had come up with a big budget extravagant critical disappointment in the form of 'Trimurti'.

Same has happened in case of 'Kites' as well which had three mighty brains behind the film - Rakesh Roshan, Anurag Basu and Hrithik Roshan. Result?

A totally notched up affair which saw a big Thumbs down from audience where hardly anyone was heard stating much positive about the film.

The film opened great, expectedly so due to factors mentioned above, and garnered close more than 10 crores on the first day itself, hence being in line with the likes of 'Housefull' and 'My Name Is Khan', two (and the only) big successes of 2010.

However, unlike these two films which still saw some appreciation (class and mass respectively) coming their way and held on well at the box office till the end of first week run, 'Kites' can't expect similar fate for itself throughout the week.

Word of mouth has been average to bad something which was evidenced earlier this year in case of 'Veer'. High price of the film means that 'Kites' will find it virtually impossible to recover cost through theatrical business.

However, if only the film would have done very well at theaters in India (which is not going to be the case now), at least the deficit would have been covered by satellite and home video rights.

However, that looks improbable now due to which 'Kites' is all set to go down as a big disappointment of the year.

Indistry was hinging it's hopes on four biggies this season - 'Housefull', 'Kites', 'Rajneeti' and 'Raavan'. With 'Housefull' being a good success and 'Kites' not looking so good, one wonders if the remaining two rather serious films will result in Bollywood smiling.
