Let me start by paying my tributes to Mallika Sherawat and her oomph, for she has been a wonderful sleaze queen till last Friday, when Neha Dhupia came as Julie and wrested her much coveted crown.
In 20 odd years, Julie has changed a lot. When you last saw her in 80s, she was a coy girl, who had an apologetic sexual encounter only to become a pariah. But today, she is endowed with J Lo's bum and doesn't hesitate to flaunt it either.
Her role models happen to be philandering housewives and sex starved hooris. No wonder, she beats them all once the klieg lights are focused on her.
Dhupia as Julie gives a new meaning to the aphorism, "When a women goes wrong, men go right after her."
And the men in contention here, are not only Yash Tonk or Sanjay Kapoor, who take her to the bed, amidst umpteen catcalls and resonating ceetees but the director Deepak Shivadasani too, who sacrifices story for the smut. Picture this:
Julie is a goody-two-shoes girl who hails from Goa. She's proud of her assets, which include the 'obvious' and her bicycle. She has a puppy love (Yash Tonk) too, who sacrifices her soon after the steamy session for the lure of lucre. Completely heartbroken, she leaves for Mumbai.
But just like her assets she has an ample luck to support her. Her one good hunch turns her into an interior designer from a secretary. Rohan (Sanjay Kapoor) is a new man in her life but the two drift apart in quite a melodramatic way when he asks her to spend a night with his client.
Consoled by her Agony aunt Delnaz, who's a pimp herself, Julie takes a bold step to venture into dark alleys of society as a call girl. Well Helloooo, isn't it the same thing poor Rohan asked for? I guess, it doesn't matter anyway. Perhaps, Mr. Shivadasani was busier choosing the skimpy lingerie Neha so he overlooked this 'minor detail'.
Julie's revenge is in full throttle. In her own words, she doesn't sell her body but buys manhood. Enter Mihir Shandilya (Priyanshu Chatterjee), the business tycoon, who falls head over heals with Julie.
How, when? Please don't ask me. Mr. Shivadasani had better things to shoot than to waste his footage on such miniscule thing. Julie, for a such a brash she is, wants to unveil the mystery about her life. What will happen now?
The power-packed climax (??) leads us to a TV host Tara's (Achint Kaur) talk show, where Julie accepts her past and magnanimous Mihir accepts Julie. And they all live happily ever after.
A loose screenplay, annoying music and trumatic background score perfectly gel with its over the top dialogues. Neha's hard work clearly shows. My heart cries out for Priyanshu, for he gets nothing apart from a sweet hug, in 'Julie'.
Go and see for yourself, why you shouldn't see this movie.
