The audiences were pleasantly surprised as Boman Irani turned a full fledged singer and did a unique rendition of Give Me Some Sunshine and We Are The World in multiple voices, and a hilarious stand up gig, at what was the fourth of the five-city tour, Teacher's Origin Highnights, hosted by Beam Global Spirits and Wine.
"I was a little apprehensive 'cause I was told the Kolkata audience is a mature one and they wouldn't laugh at just anything, but we did fine, " Irani said after the show with a chuckle.
Apart from singing, Irani also shared with the audience the story of how he came into showbiz; "Up till the age of 32 I used to work at this wafer shop in Mumbai and then at a really terrible holiday in Ooty I decided I had to something with my life, " he said.
"The 'something' turned out to be photography and then I met choreographer Shiamak Davar, Alyque Padamsee and then eventually Raju Hirnai who gave me a break in his film Munnabhai M.B.B.S." he added.
Mahadevan spoke on how songs originated through brainstorming within his group Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy and also performed his popular numbers like Breathless and Maa.
"All that there is to music are the seven notes, everything is created through these, mixed in various proportions and intensity" he said.
The duo topped the evening with Irani singing My Way and Mahadevan singing Kal Ho Naa Ho, together.
After show, when asked about this trip to Kolkata, Mahadevan said, "Seriously speaking, one of the best things about this trip was the food; Sayantani, a member of our team got us lunch from her home and her mother prepared amazing Golda Chingrir Malaikari and Ilish Bhape. Food totally does it for me."
Asked if he was nervous in hosting, and not just singing, an entire evening, Mahadevan replied, "Nervous? Yeah, a lot. But Boman's fantastic. Once I get up there on stage with him, it just flows."
He further said, "It was incredible learning experience touring with Boman. He's got super-talent. I'd be willing to do this for the next five years; definitely something long term."
On being asked about work, he said, "All I can say right now is that we (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) are working on a new album and it's going to be something different."
Boman Irani, who also recently co-hosted the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Awards in Colombo, said, "I find there's no greater pleasure than making people laugh. I love what I do. The reaction the applause, it's very uplifting."
Irani who is working on several projects including the sequels of Don and Dostana, said, "Don 2 is something totally new; It's a completely new story, really excited about it."
Asked about working in Bengali cinema, the 53-year-old actor replied, "Oh yes, am open to everything; film cinema is the language and I do my work just for the experience."
Amongst the audience were singer Usha Uthup and musician Bikram Ghosh.
Ghosh, who's new album releases a day later, said, "I've known the duo for quite some time, I did a tour with Shankar and worked on the score of Irani's movie, Little Zizou, they are superbly talented, it was a a great evening."
Uthup, who has known Irani since his young days for she was friends with his sister, was all praises for the duo; "They were amazing", she said.
