After two hits in a row - "Qayamat" and "Girlfriend" -Aashish Chowdhury has already moved on to
doing "films with intelligent scripts".
Not one to gloat about success, Aashish is working on two films with "new and varied characters".
He is doing "Whiteland" with Gracy Singh as heroine. It is a film "which is something on the lines of
'Lagaan', in terms of ambience and setting," said Aashish.
"It's set in Dandi in Kutch, during the British rule. Coincidentally, Gracy Singh was also in 'Lagaan'. I
play Hariya and she's Meethi. It's really a film that fits into my thinking of trying out new and varied
characters."
Aashish is feeling gung ho about his other film that's due for release and which is called "Let's Enjoy".
"It's about this guy, Armaan Pratap Singh, who's come from the US and decides to throw a party on
his farmhouse at Delhi to catch up with all his friends. While there are about 30 to 40 people in the
film, the story boils down to just 14-15 characters and finally these four stories that are unfolding that
one night.
"It's nothing like a regular commercial film, no formulae added and I'm really kicked about doing it. It's
about this one rocking night. I would call it an ensemble film where the characters are getting at one
another."
His co-stars in the film are Arzoo Gowitrikar and a "whole lot of talented guys from Delhi theatre."
"You know when I went to Delhi for shooting I thought I would teach them a lesson or two but after the
rehearsals and workshops the directors had held for us, I think I learnt more about acting. I knew I was
up against some good actors and had to pull up my socks. That's great for me because I want to
constantly learn and evolve." he said.
On the brouhaha over "Girlfriend", he said given a chance he would still do that film "because I can
relate to it. But sorry, I can't relate to the controversy that went with it".
"You won't believe it but after 'Girlfriend' I was besieged with all kinds of sleaze film offers. If I had done
all those films I would have become a porn star!"
Aashish said he's realistic enough about his standing as an actor.
"I want to do films which give me an opportunity to do varied stuff because I see the result of formula
films every Friday. If I am criticised for acting in 'Girlfriend', I'm sure 'Let's Enjoy' will take that flak off
me."
After his brief stint on TV, Aashish is enjoying the big screen immensely. He has several films in his
kitty like Padam Kumar's "Kahin Bhi Kabhi Bhi" with Dino Morea and Dia Mirza, Ajay Chandok's
"Kisse Pyaar Karun" with Arshad Warsi and Udita Goswami, and a thriller with Karan Razdan.
