Singing legend Asha Bhosle, who has sung over 12, 000 songs in 18 languages, turned 77 Wednesday. And she was
showered with greeting and blessings from many including megastar Amitabh Bachchan and her elder sister Lata
Mangeshkar.
The singer, who started singing at a very young age, is known for her versatility. After crooning a series of hits for the
Hindi film industry's dancing queen Helen, she was tagged as a cabaret singer.
Friends and fans of the Padma Vibhushan awardee took to micro blogging site Twitter to convey their birthday wishes.
"Asha ji, janm divas ki dher sari shubhkamanayein... Aap swasth rahen aur sukhi sampann rahen yahi ishwar se
prarthana hai. (My best wishes on your birthday. May god keep you in good health and shower you with wealth and
happiness), " Bachchan posted on Twitter.
Asha's elder sister Lata Mangeshkar also showered blessings and love.
"Aaj meri choti behen Asha ka janamdin hai, uske janamdin ke awasar pe main usey anek aashirwad deti hu (Today is
my younger sister's birthday and I wish her all the luck and happiness for years ahead), " Lata Mangeshkar posted on her
Twitter page.
And Asha, who is in Singapore for a concert, thanked her fans and well-wishers for their messages.
"Friends, brothers and sisters, once again thank you for your well wishes and b'day greetings. Talk to you soon from
Singapore, " Asha posted on her Twitter page.
Asha's real talent was noticed by composer R.D. Burman, who was instrumental in bringing her out of her elder sister and
singing legend Lata Mangeshkar's shadow. Asha and Burman later married.
Songs like "Dum maro dum" ("Hare Rama, Hare Krishna"), "Mehbooba mehbooba" ("Sholay"), "Mera kuch saaman"
("Ijaazat"), "Piya tu ab to aaja" ("Caravan") and "Chura liya hai tum ne" ("Yaadon Ki Baraat") bear testimony to the
amazing creativity of the Asha-Burman combination.
