Despite tough competition from two big releases Anjaana Anjaani and Robot, JD Majethia's Khichdi managed to get the biggest opening (Rs 5.5 crore gross; in ticket sales) for a film with no stars after Peepli [Live].
The producer is now contemplating making a sequel to the hit film.
The film opened to Rs 1.15 crore (including previews) and went on to make more money on following days. It grossed Rs 2.08 crore and Rs 2.28 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Gujarat, the biggest market for the film, has lapped up the TV-to-film adaptation and doubled the revenue for Sunday.
Talking about the film's success JD says, "People from all across the country have been texting in.
They've watched the film several times and have loved it.
I feel if we hadn't opened against a biggie like Anjaana Anjaani which had a huge budget and a well laid promotional strategy we would have tripled our profits.
Despite that, we have managed a record-breaking opening weekend."
He adds, "Obviously, hardcore Khichdi fans have enjoyed it the most. But I've also got feedback from many who hadn't seen the show but had a ball at the theatres. We've succeeded in roping in a new fan base with the movie."
Does he plan on a sequel? "Why not? But we have to work out the economics first. We have to figure out how much money the movie has made overall before we start scripting the next.
But I definitely would want to make a second movie on the show."
Other sequels in the making:
Dostana 2
Dhoom 3

Partner 2
