Patel has to rapidly shed his British accent and learnt to speak like an authentic Punjabi for his character in the film. He apparently now spends all his time working on his Punjabi angrezi.
Dev is reportedly looking at a full-time career in Bollywood, provided he gets a role a good role and can pick up enough Hindi to deliver the dialogues.
The failure of The Last Airbender came as a rude shock to Dev. A friend of the actor says, "Dev had great hopes from The Last Airbender, he was a real fan of the original and wanted to work with the director Manoj Shyamalan. He's now hoping that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will redeem his film career."
The friend continues to say, "Slumdog Millionaire happened too suddenly to him. He was just 18. From being teased for being a Mama's boy, Dev has now matured into an adult. He spends all his off-camera time in Udaipur with his co-stars." Director John Madden is best known for his film Shakespeare In Love, the film also stars British actors Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson.
Sound designer Resul Pookutty was part of the production team for Slumdog Millionaire and is now working on The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Having worked closely with Patel he says, "Dev has really evolved as a human being and actor. All the veteran British actors on location here have adopted him."
With the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Patel has a hard time coping with the sudden attention. In Udaipur however he is anonymous with hardly anyone recognising him or the other British actors.
