SATYAKAM: This film featured my father (Dharmendra) along with Sharmila Tagore. An extremely emotional subject directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, it is considered to be one of dad's best films. When I first saw it, I was young and did not understand the movie's underlying message. It was only much later I realised what it all meant " people's ideals and virtues.
KHAMOSHI: I remember watching a 16-mm print of this Waheeda Rehman-Rajesh Khanna starrer on a projector. Watching a movie at home or at someone else's place on a projector was a huge thing for us as kids. It was a big event and we looked forward to it. What I still recall are the tracks like Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb Thi, Yeh Shaam Bhi Ajeeb Hai and Humne Dekhi Hain Un Aankhon Ki Mahekti Khusboo.
PHOOL AUR PATHAR: O P Ralhan's film was what made my father catapult into stardom. With Meena Kumari in the cast, this was one of the earliest films I have watched of my dad. I used to find the movie mindboggling.
PYAASA: Guru Dutt's classic is one more film I recall watching repeatedly on a 16 mm projector. I used to find the movie haunting especially its track Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye Toh Kya Hai as well as the hummable Sar Jo Tera Chakraye.
WESTSIDE STORY: This American movie is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. It's a lavish musical and everything looked so lavish in the film. It's sheer grandeur left me impressed.
