Upset over smooching photographs appearing in a tabloid, Bollywood actors Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor on Wednesday slapped legal notices on "Mid-Day" demanding an unconditional apology or else face a defamation suit.
The newspaper carried photographs of the two stars in kissing scenes claiming they were clicked at a party in a restaurant recently.
While the actors denied they had posed for such scenes in real life, the editor of "Mid-Day" Aakar Patel stood by the newspaper's claim that they were indeed Shahid and Kareena.
Kareena slapped a notice on the newspaper asking an apology and claiming Rs 20 crore damages for loss of reputation. Kapoor has also sent a notice although he has not specified the amount of damages.
Kareena told a news channel that she belonged to the respectable Raj Kapoor's family and she could never have done this in public.
"The pictures are false and baseless and not ours," she said adding it had caused great deal of shock and embarrassment to her. "I can never do such a thing in a restaurant", the actress said.
If such a thing could happen to her it could also happen to anyone else in the society, Kareena said.
Shahid also appeared on television to deny the photographs and said both belonged to respectable families and could not have done this.
He also denied having gone to "Rain" restaurant in the last three months and said the last time he and Kareena had gone there was on September 21 which happened to be her birthday.
"On that day, there were several persons in that restaurant and we could not have done this", he said.
Asked whether their photographs would have been morphed, Shahid and Kareena said "may be" but reiterated that they had never kissed in the restaurant or anywhere else.
"I am shocked and upset over such photographs and also because the newspaper did not approach us for any clarification," Shahid said.
The editor of Mid-Day Aakar Patel, however, told the television channel that the photographs were those of Kareena and Shahid and that his newspaper would fight the legal battle while justifying that celebrities were public figures and there was nothing wrong in focusing on their private lives.
