A silent Bhupen Hazarika reaches Guwahati

The body of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika reached from Mumbai to Guwahati on Monday morning as thousands of people assembled to catch a glimpse of their Assamese icon for the last time.

The Jet Airways flight that carried his body touched Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati around 11.30 am.

A guard of honour was given to the singer who passed away at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday.

Governor J.B. Patnaik and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi paid floral tribute to the man who contributed significantly to the world of music before his deep baritone silenced post a multi-organ failure.

From airport, Hazarika's body was taken to his residence at Nizarapar area here.

After being kept at the residence for sometime, the body will be taken to various significant places of the city like Dharapur, Gauhati University, Maligaon, Bharalumukh, Dighalipukhuri.

Hazarika's body will then be kept at Judges Field ground for the common people people to pay their last tribute to their icon.

Hazarika's son, Tez Bhupen Hazarika, will arrive from New York to Guwahati on Tuesday to perform the last rites.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has announced a state holiday on Tuesday in honour of Hazarika.

The funeral will take place at Cachal on Tuesday afternoon.

Hazarika was suffering from respiratory and kidney failure. He was 85.

The singer was undergoing dialysis at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after both his kidneys failed. He was admitted to the hospital on June 29.

As a singer, Hazarika was known for his deep baritone voice and crisp diction; as a lyricist, he was known for poetic compositions and parables that touch on a wide range of themes ranging from the erotic to social and political commentary; and as a composer for his use of folk music with a touch of the contemporary.

In addition to his native Assamese, Hazarika sang in many other Indian languages, including Bengali and Hindi, many of these the translations of originally Assamese-composed songs.
