Comeback of the veteran directors, Their only worry is public acceptance

Several veteran filmmakers are choosing to don the director's hat again. There's one thing they are all hoping for, and that's the audiences' acceptance

Following in the footsteps of Yash Chopra who is making a comeback as a director after almost seven years, other veteran directors like Ramesh Sippy and Rahul Rawail, have also taken the leap.

Yash Chopra
The king of romance Yash Chopra is making a comeback (his last directorial venture was Veer Zara) with a love story starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

The filmmaker however doesn't see this as a comeback. He says, "My last film was Veer-Zaara (2004) which was seven years after Dil to Pagal Hai (1997).

It's not a comeback this time. You can call it the seven-year itch! And my question is, why not a love story? Yash Chopra has been called a romantic very often and it's what I do best.

The director says he doesn't need to reinvent himself "Just tell my story straight from the heart as I have always done."

As he starts his new venture he admits about being faced with a lot of questions. "I hear my inner voice asking me a lot of questions. Are you sure you want to direct again, you are nearly 80 years old?

Will I be able to live up to the blind faith that Shah Rukh Khan has in me and give him yet another memorable romantic film? Will I be able to present Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma like never before?

Will I be able to inspire Rahman and Gulzar Bhai enough to create their best work? Honestly, I don't know!" "All I know is that I'm making a film that I believe in." He adds.

Ramesh Sippy
Ramesh Sippy is returning to filmmaking after 16 years. The Sholay director's film is in the pre-production stage and will go on floor early next year.

Sippy says, "I have no apprehensions. Clint Eastwood directed his first film at the age of 75. So it doesn't mean that age is a factor while making films and relating to people. I will make my kind of film keeping in mind today's audience. And I hope they will accept it."

Talking about what prompted him to return to his 'first love', he says, "The desire to direct never left. I just needed a kind of a resolution on my part.

The subject that I have chosen is a romantic thriller. The audience is open-minded, and willing to accept fresh ideas. There is a bit of shift in moral values, but the basic emotion will always be respected."

He hopes that people don't compare his forthcoming with his cult. "Sholay became a phenomenon. It's like crown with a lot of thorns. You can try to make a damn good film. That's the best you can do. "

Kundan Shah
The director of the cult movie Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Kundan Shah is also returning to direction after seven years.

He had announced Masquerade two years ago with Mallika Sherawat but it apparently got shelved due to creative and financial issues.

We hear that Shah is soon going to make an announcement. The filmmaker is non-committal. "Yes, I am working on few scripts. One of those may or may not go on floors."
