Joint Chief Election Officer N S Navti told reporters that Remo was selected among three civilian awardees after it was found that he does not have any political affiliations.
The poll officer said the singer will indulge in publicity campaigns urging electorates to vote for the right candidate.
"We selected him as the electoral icon as he is a special person without any political links. He will create awareness about the voting rights among the general public to push up the voter turnover," he further said.
Around nine hoardings of the 58-year-old singer's messages have been put up across the state.
