If a seasoned performer like Asha Bhosle can make an album such as Aap Ki Asha, what hope do we have for the countless other Indi pop artistes. Asha Bhosle`s debut as a composer was awaited with bated breath. However after listening to this album one feels that she should stick to singing only and leave the composing part to veterans in the field.
Na Marte Hum is the first song of this album. It is marred by a lot of western instrumentation but has some Indian element like flute thrown in for good measure. One of the better songs of this rather uninspiring album. Skip the next Haske Mila Na Karo and get to Aisa Bhi Kya that has two versions - Fast and Hiphop. Don't ask the difference between the two, as both are equally bad.
The next song, Dil Pyar Mein Lutake has a little bit of the old melody in it and is a decent enough song. Uljhi Laton Ki Tarah is the last song on Side A and starts with Asha singing an alaap. A fusion between ghazal, classical and western music, there is nothing much in it except its thought provoking lyrics by the late Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Salamat Salamat has strong Arabic strains and influences. Asha tries to sing in an Arabic accent but fails miserably. Fast forward to the next Dekhna Ha - aa which has the singer in her usual element. Good but not at all of the standard associated with all of Asha Bhosle`s songs. Dil Mere Gaaye Ja is a slow number once again with good lyrics. Finally the album ends with a Tribute To Majrooh Sahab is a dialogue by Asha Bhosle reminiscing about Majroohji.
On the whole Aap Ki Asha is a complete disappointment to all her fans. Surprisingly she sounds rather out of tune and listless, considering it is her debut album as a music director. A pretty avoidable album.
