Vishal Bhardwaj, who has many identities including that of a director, writer, music composer and playback singer, turned a year older on Monday.

Bhardwaj, who was born in Uttar Pradesh in 1965, turned 47.

Bhardwaj, who has scored music for several Hindi films including 'Satya', 'Chachi 420', 'Maqbool', 'Omkara', 'Kaminey', 'Ishqiya', '7 Khoon Maaf', started his career playing harmonium for little known ghazal singers.

Bhardwaj was later on recommended to the poet turned filmmaker Gulzar, by a friend.

Bhardwaj received critical acclaim for his music in Gulzar's film 'Maachis' (1996), which won several Filmfare awards.

He added another feather to his crown as he won two National Film Awards in the category of Best Music Director in 1999 and 2010 for critically acclaimed films 'Godmother' and 'Ishqiya'.

His success story continued as he entered the realm of film direction. His first directorial debut was children's film 'Makdee', which won international award.

He made screen adaptations of Shakespearean tragedy, 'Macbeth' and 'Othello'. His critically acclaimed film 'Maqbool' was inspired by 'Macbeth', for his actor Pankaj Kapoor won a National Film Award.

His second Shakespearean adaptation was 'Omkara', which won several awards including three National Film Awards, and seven Filmfare Awards.

Bhardwaj's two other ventures 'The Blue Umbrella' and '7 Khoon Maaf' were based on Ruskin Bond's 'The Blue Umbrella', and 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'.

The filmmaker's upcoming project includes 'Dedh Ishqiya' where Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit will make her comeback after 'Aaja Nachle', and 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola'.
