It was 14 years ago when Rani Mukerji first shared screen space with Aamir Khan. Then came an item song in Mann and they also played a couple in Mangal Pandey. And now the light-eyed actress is back with Aamir in his upcoming thriller, co-starring Kareena Kapoor.
Dressed comfortably in a salwaar-kameez and sitting in her plush Juhu office, Rani talks about her equations with the actor, her impending marriage and the late Yash Chopra gorging on her rasgulla chat.
It has been nearly 14 years since Ghulam...
On a very personal note when I did Ghulam with Aamir, I was barely 16 or 17. It was a very impressionable age. I looked up to him as an actor, as a person and learnt a lot from him.
Over the years we developed a very strong friendship for life. He is someone who I can call even at 3 in the night and ask for help. At times now I have to remind myself I'm working with the 'star' Aamir and not my friend Aamir.
Apparently Aamir still scolds you?
Yes, he does it! He scolded me on the sets as well and even after that. But he does it out of love.
There is buzz the promotions are thanda.
I won't be able to comment on it. A film's marketing team works as per its strategy. Today promotions play a very important role. Also when you have Aamir, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani at the helm of thing, they exactly know what they are doing.
Is it true that Aamir was not happy with this film?
Really? I had no clue about all this. Also the buzz that the film is similar to Kahaani is not true.
Are you happy with your last film Aiyaa?
The initial reactions were not very good and then I lost touch with the film. It was around the same time when Yash (Chopra) uncle was not keeping well. You get to know the audience's perception on a Friday and after that you can't do much to save a film.
Are you bored of questions about your long-due wedding?
No, how can a girl get bored of questions about her wedding? Just because I'm an actress people ask me this in public. Other girls have to reply to the same question at their homes. The day people stop asking me; I will believe that they have lost interest in me.
Yashji was very fond of rasgulla chat that you served him at your home.
It is actually dahi wada. The rasgulla substitutes the wada. In fact, it was my caterer who invented this dish and fortunately everyone loves it!
