"Nirbhay Gurjar has sent us letters, threatening to kill me and Seema Parihar who plays the title role in the film," writer-director of the film Krishna Mishra, showing copies of the purported letter, told reporters in Lucknow.
Gurjar alleged that the director has shown him as "naked and being beaten up in the film" at the behest of Parihar, who was once married to Gurjar but abandoned him for another dacoit, Lalaram.
Mishra has sought protection for his unit and his family in Mumbai in the wake of the threats.
The film, mainly shot in Etawah, Jalaun, Auraiyya and Kanpur Dehat districts of Uttar Pradesh, was complete but pending approval with the censor board, he said.
"There is not much ground for the censor board to hold up the film as barring the use of abusive language by dacoits, there is no objectionable content in it," he said.
He claimed that the film was based on a true story with "hardly any element of reconstruction ... Dacoits obviously do not speak a refined language".
Parihar, who was also present at the news conference, said she had not thought about joining politics as yet and was keenly awaiting the release of the film.
The former dacoit, who still has eight cases lodged against her, is out on bail.
