The 29-year-old plays the role of an educated Haryanvi boy, who comes back to his village.
To give his character an authentic touch, Imran even learnt the local dialect, but admits he was still unsure if he would be able to crack the role well.
"I was very scared while working in the movie. Many times I thought I could not do it, but Vishal sir showed faith in me.
In my opinion, every artist should be afraid when he faces something new," Imran said here Tuesday.
"Matru..." also features veteran actor Pankaj Kapur, whose presence inspired Imran to perform better.
"It was intimidating in terms of thought. (But) I am grateful that I had someone like Pankaj sir in front of me. It made me want to perform better," said the actor, who made his debut with "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na".
"Matru..." is a political satire based on the issue of land scam. It also features Anushka Sharma and Shabana Azmi.
