Item numbers are no different from normal songs and are "extremely beneficial" for an actress' career, believes Prachi Desai

"Item numbers are extremely beneficial in an actress' career. If you get a song which really cracks it for you, it is fantastic as people, more than watching your film, watch you on TV in that song! It is great," Prachi told in an interview.

"These days I don't see much difference between a normal song and an item number. You can call anything, anything, as long as it is an entertaining song and people take to it," said the actress who is yet to do an item number herself.

Prachi became a known face after her stint in Ekta Kapoor's TV show "Kasamh Se". She quit when it was at its peak and went to Bollywood.

She made her big screen debut with a role in 2008 film "Rock On!!" and later went on to do films like "Life Partner", "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" and "Bol Bachchan".

In her forthcoming film "I Me Aur Main", Prachi sports a glamorous look, and has danced to a peppy song - a new age version of Sridevi's chartbuster "Na jaane kahaan se aayi hai".

"People kept telling me 'why don't you do something different?'. I was like, 'I can't break out into a dance in the middle of a serious film!' You need to stick to the role which you are playing and everything needs to revolve around that.

In the films which I have done, they didn't give me a chance to be this way," she said.

The 24-year-old says she has nothing to complain about and is content with her career.

"Whatever I have done before this is very special to me. 'Bol Bachchan' came to me at the right time. Every actor needs that kind of commercial film in his or her career as it can boost one's popularity," she said.

In a short span of just about five years, Prachi, an "outsider", has managed to carve a niche for herself in the industry. She attributes her success to luck.

"In this industry, everything works for you by luck. I think it is tougher for us outsiders as it is with great difficulty that you get chances and opportunities, and you don't get to prove yourself in one go.

You need to keep doing it in your second and third chance. It is a lot tougher for us," she said.
