Actress Monica Bedi, who plays a vamp in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut TV show 'Saraswatichandra', was not sceptical about doing a negative role and says she does not fear being typecast on the small screen

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's show is based on the popular Gujarati novel 'Saraswatichandra' by Govardhanram Madhavaram Tripathi. It is set in the early 20th century and revolves around two Gujarati families.

"I don't fear getting typecast. I am not scared of being called the vamp of small screen. As this is not the typical vamp character. It is a grey shade... It is not negative completely. If we look at what SRK did in 'Baazigar', Kajol did in 'Gupt'.. Its the biggest of artists who did negative characters... It adds to your career," Monica told in an interview here.

"I am not worried that I would be looked in a negative way. I think today audience is far more intelligent to understand that this is a character and that we are just working," she said.

Considering she is not married and plays a role of a stepmother in the soap, Monica said, "I was not sceptical to take a role of a stepmother. This role is very interesting. I am in love with this character. There is lot of scope for acting and to do something different. I couldn't see myself doing typical sweet heroine kind of a role."

The 35-year-old feels negative characters are of utmost importance as they bring in a juicy element. "Somewhere I feel negative characters are quite interesting to play on screen. As they are the ones who bring twists and turns in the story," she said.

Talking about her role, Monica says, "She is a very smart girl. She is powerful and an intelligent lady. Her background is that she is a dancer and how she enters the life of this multi billionaire and marries him, tries to claim the property. She is possessive and caring towards her family."

"A grey shade is there... It is not a typical villain character with vampish looks. She is an elegant lady," Monica said. The show features popular TV actors Gautam Rode and Jennifer Winget in lead, apart from Monica and Chetan Pandit. It went on air yesterday. The show will be aired at 7.30 pm from Monday to Friday.
