"We are shooting at the moment. We should finish by the 23rd of this month (March). We will finish way in advance. We will release the film by August 30," the actor-producer told IANS.
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, "Madras Cafe" also stars Nargis Fakhri. John is said to be playing an intelligence agent in the political thriller.
There were reports of John trying to rope in Malayalam superstar Mohanlal for the film, but he denied it.
"Mohanlal is not a part of the film. But I can say for sure that we have an eclectic cast," said the 40-year-old who last featured in "I, Me Aur Main", which didn't do well at the box office.
"Madras Cafe" is Johh's next production venture after super hit "Vicky Donor".
