Kool, ultra-cool - that just about defines the mood for this week's releases. With Harry Baweja's profound
"Main Aisa Hi Hoon" and Ekta Kapoor's "Kya Kool Hain Hum" targeted at the urban youth, viewers can look
forward to a week of variety.
With "Kya Kool Hain Hum", TV tycoon Ekta turns film producer again. So what if she has burnt her fingers
with her first three "Kyunkii Main Jhooth Nahin Bolta", "Kucch To Hai" and "Krishna Cottage"? She knows
what she wants and is determined to get it.
Evidently inspired by the success of Indra Kumar's raunchy sex comedy "Masti" last year, Ekta Kapoor has
got her "Krishna Cottage" director Sangeeth Sivan (brother of Santosh Sivan) to do an ensemble
comedy.
"Kya Kool Hain Hum" features brother Tusshar with "Masti" star Riteish Deshmukh and Ekta insists there's no
sex in the film. "It's just about guys having fun."
She targets the film at the cool urban gang. Even the girls Neha Dhupia and Isha Koppiker use their sexy
images to have fun.
Sex is also far from the point in this week's other, more important and hopefully significant film. "Main Aisa Hi
Hoon" is written by Bhavani Iyer who scripted "Black". But will "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" bring back some of the
"Black" magic?
Interestingly, like "Black", "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" focuses on the life of the physically challenged protagonist.
Ajay Devgan plays a mentally challenged man fighting for the custody of his child. Sushmita Sen, back to the
screen after her successful stint as the sensuous teacher in "Main Hoon Na", plays Devgan's lawyer.
The film attempts to replicate "Black" in its protagonist's predicament and is also shot in Shimla. But will
director Harry Baweja replicate any of the excellence of "Black"?
Baweja's film brings back Ajay Devgan and Esha Deol for the second time in two weeks after "Kaal". After
Mani Rathnam's "Yuva", the two are seen doing a tango together in "Main Aisa Hi Hoon".
Though Ajay is gung-ho about the project, distributors don't think a film featuring the leading man as mentally
challenged would work.
But let's not forget, this is the year of the different cinema.
The first quarter of the year has thrown forward some of the most unusual films seen in recent years. From
"Black" and "Page 3" to "My Brother...Nikhil", the unusual has become almost usual.
Who knows "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" could become the "Munnabhai M.B.B.S." of 2005. It all depends on the
audience.
