The 56-year-old actor says people back then were not very familiar with the idea of sequels. Finally, 'Ghayal Returns' is in development and Sunny plans to begin shooting it by the end of this year.
"I liked the concept of 'Ghayal' and wanted to make a second part of the film but no director or producer was ready at that time. When we started making sequels, I thought 'Ghayal' should be the first film to have a second part because there was a scope to take the story forward," Sunny told PTI in an interview.
There were reports that the production was stalled for sometime because Sunny was not happy with the script and film's previous director Ashwini Chaudhury, who was replaced by Rahul Rawail of 'Arjun Pandit' fame.
"We are working on it right now, Earlier we had some problem with the director and the script. But everything is sorted now. 'Ghayal' is such an iconic film and it's a big challenge to satisfy the audience again," Sunny said. The 1990 hit saw Sunny and actress Meenakshi Seshadri in the lead. Though Sunny will reprise the character of Ajay Mehra in the film, the hunt for the lead actress is still on.
"We will take a new face for the movie. We are holding auditions but we haven't got the talent and beauty that Meenakshi had," he said. Meenakshi quit acting after 'Ghatak' and shifted to New York after marrying an investment banker.
Sunny also took a break as a lead after 'Heroes'. But Sunny made a comeback with brother Bobby and father Dharmendra for 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' in 2011. The National-award-winning actor said it is important to be an all rounder these days in the industry. The trio are leaving no stones unturned for the promotion of the film. "It's important to be an all rounder these days.
The films have become a one man's show and one character plays all the shades of hero, comedian and villain. This is something new which we are also learning," he said. 'Yamla Pagla Deewana 2' will hit theatres on June 7. Sunny is also excited about his 21-year-old son Karan, who worked as an assistant director to filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan.
"I am happy that my son also has an interest in filmmaking. He also assisted Sangeethji for 'Yamla Pagla Deewana 2'. He even wrote the lyrics of the song 'I will dance only' and also lent his voice for the rap section. He will make his acting debut soon," Sunny said.
