Well it looks like gone are the days when Indian cinema was governed by genres like romance, family-dramas or action, now in this Gen-X age of Indian cinema, it's Bromance and juvenile camaraderie which seems to be emerging as trump card in Bollywood, where our cine thinker are not only banking upon this sought-after genre, but are also making cash register ring at the power of bromance. Be it "3 Idiots" "Dil Chahata Hai", "Rock On!", "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" or "Kai Po Che!" every time spell of bromance has succeeded in fetching a huge bunch of accolades not only for the performers but for the conceptualisers too.
After creating a memorable magic through "Dil Chahata Hai" and "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", Farhan Akhtar and Rakesh Sidhwani have once again teamed up together for a somewhat juvenile tale "Fukrey".
Although "Fukrey" is knitted around the core of juvenile camaraderie among teen aged friends, but for a change this time it is sans those larger than life school campuses and fairy world like locations.
With a novel premise at its core "Fukrey" is fun ride which up till an extent show cases the mindset of today's youth for whom opting a shortcut is most convenient way to their dream world. So is the case with story of "Fukrey" which basically is a hilarious narration about four guys and their rendezvous with an idea gone wrong kinda situation.
But a fact which needs to be mentioned before going ahead with the dissection of the movie is that it neither begins on serious note and nor ends up being preachy, it is just a fun ride which from beginning till it's culmination remains focused on three things entertainment, entertainment and entertainment.
Primarily "Fukrey" showcases the story of four guys Honey (Pulkit Samrat), Choocha ( Varun Sharma) two class 12th sophomores who after flunking from past two years are now eager to liberate from their school life and want to get enrolled in college in order to secure some youthful relief (especially pertaining to girls) in their lives.
Besides the Honey and Choocha there are two more guys, Lali (Manjot Singh), a mild-mannered correspondence student who makes regular trips to the Gurudwara in order to get migrated to his supposed girlfriend's college. And the fourth guy of the gang is Zafar (Ali Fazal) a failed musician who mills around the same college because his former girlfriend Neetu (Vishakha Singh) is a teacher there.
As the story takes off, besides unfurling the aspirations of these lads it also put forth a weird phenomena also where Choocha gets dreams, which Honey interprets and decodes them in order to try their luck in lottery.
With frames rolling ahead the duo with a motive of acquiring the examination papers in advance, decides to invest a hefty sum in their lottery game in order to gain a massive sum.
Meanwhile falling prey to their life circumstances Zafar and Lali also joins the band, but the things turn upside down for the four when they take loan from a female gangster, Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadda), but could not manage to win the lottery.
As far as the script of the "Fukrey" is concerned then it seems to be unconventional up till an extent, but it will be wrong to call it something out of the box. The premise of "Fukrey" is uptill an extent a neatly embroidered slice of life decorated with circumstantial humor in it.
And at the same time it very well captures the psyche of today's youth. Unlike the aforementioned movies i.e "3 Idiots", "Rock On!" belonging to the ilk of bromance "Fukrey" don't try to sent across any message and keeps itself confide with in the span of entertainment only.
Some of the characters in this hilarious saga may look unwanted, but keeping in view the massive entertainment quotient their unwanted presence can be negated.
And yeah besides this another dimension which some of the radical thinkers may find suitable for criticism is that twisted "Interpretation of Dreams" (Guys it has nothing to do with Sigmund Freud), but I guess it is OK as long as it succeeds in amusing the masses. Undoubtedly it is the quick witted and wacky humor of "Fukrey" which emerges as its USP, it gets a bit gauche at times but thankfully it never makes you feel embarrassed.
To sum up, a huge bunch of accolades for Vipul Vig and Mrighdeep Singh Lamba for deploying such a fine writing adroitness in order to knit a captivating tale which manages to entertain you throughout its run time. And yeah how can one forget to make a mention of Fukrey's rib tickling rhetoric chunks which are high on fun gauge and compels you to giggle.
Screenplay of "Fukrey" further adds to the captivating coefficient of the movie. It takes off at a constant pace and up-till great extent succeeds in maintaining the momentum throughout the run time.
Though for couple of minutes in the first half one may feel it to be stretched a bit, but due to constant dose of humor it never becomes cumbersome and by the time climax arrives it regains it's pace and conveniently succeeds in leaving fans satiated.
In fact it won't be wrong to say that it's the unhindered smooth pace of narration that up-till great extent magnifies the over all appeal of the movie.
After his earlier forgettable directional cine stint "Teen Thay Bhai" this time Mrigdeep Singh Lamba has quite comfortably succeeded in keeping everything under tabs and has come up with a praiseworthy cine saga.
Be it about capturing the milieus of Delhi or extracting the best out of the protagonists, everything has been done with such a perfection that it thoroughly succeeds in leaving its impact. Besides this it is the proportionate editing of Anand Subaya which complements the cinematographic skills of Mrighdeep.
In music department Ram Sampat's music very well complements the mood of the movie. With "Fuk Fuk Fukrey", "Jugaad Karle" being the the peppy delights "Ambarsariya" is the pick of the deck.
Now coming to the performance, but before that a pat on the back of Fukrey's casting director Honey Trehan who managed to bring together some of the most eligible contender for the roles in "Fukrey".
After "Bittoo Boss", Pulkit has once again succeeded in putting forth an honest and confident effort and has very well carried the youthful charm of a juvenile.
By his performance Manjot as Lali has thoroughly proved that he has long way to go and has got tremendous potential to gel up with the spirit of his character.
Although Ali Fazal has looked somewhat unwanted but somehow manages to perform his part with a noteworthy performance. But out of all the four guys in the movie it's Varun Sharma who emerges as the stand out performer of this humorous whizzbang. And it's his stupendous timing and natural performance which keeps shouldering entertainment coefficient of the movie till its culmination.
Although Richa seems to be somewhat under utilized, but inspite of that this otherwise talented actress performs in a terrific manner. Pankaj Tripati again succeeds in registering his onscreen presence. The two lovely ladies of the movie Priya Anand and Vishakha Singh don't get much scope to perform but in spite of that whatever chunk of work they had they performed it with utmost dexterity.
As far as earning potential of "Fukrey" is concerned then it needs a good word of mouth publicity in order to make it to the financial status of other movies belonging to it's ilk.
To sum up, loaded with ammunition of fun and circumstantial humor "Fukrey" is a rocking entertainment whizzbang which will not disappoint you in any manner.
