The reason? Producer Ashok Thakeria and director Indra Kumar didn't want accusations of vulgarity to impede their film's release at the last minute.
Confirming this writer Milap Jhaveri says, `Yes we did get Grand Masti censored three months in advance. It is a sex comedy, and we're making no bones about it.Induji and Ashokji wanted to get the censor certificate, and only then lock in the release date so as to be on the safe side.`
While Jhaveri refuses to divulge any more information on the content of this film, a friend of Jhaveri spills the beans saying, `The Grand Masti team is telling everyone that it is by far the most uninhibited sex comedy ever made in Bollywood.
It makes Masti look like a naughty kindergarten play.If you remember Masti was regarded as a new benchmark in on-screen obscenity when it was released in 2004. We even had a scene where it looked like Riteish was performing fellatio on Aftab. Grand Masti goes much further.
Adds the source, `When Masti was released, things were pretty different for the three principal actors. But now Vivek Oberoi and Riteish Deshmukh are married .While one is a father the other is looking at a political career.
They were both very hesitant to take up the material when they read Jhaveri's no-holds-barred innuendos. As for Aftab he is inherently shy and inhibited. He can't even use the F word let along all those Hindi obscenities that the three actors have to spew in Grand Masti.`
Apparently a lack of serious choices in their careers and also the temptation of encoring a very big success (the biggest in all the three actors'career) tempted Oberoi, Deshmukh and Shivdasani back into doing what the team of Grand Masti unabashedly describes as raunchy-entertainment unlimited.
Says Milap Jhaveri, `Grand Masti is the Sholay of sex comedies. It is India's wildest sex comedy ever.`
