It's been more than two weeks that Indra Kumar's Grand Masti hit the marquee but thanks to the new releases' insipid response, the sex comedy is on a roll even into its third week. Of all the four new releases Warning, Prague, Maaziii and Supermodel none of them were able to create any ripple in the box office, paving the way for Grand Masti to emerge stronger.
The film is expected to reach the Rs 100 crore mark soon (worldwide market) and has raked in Rs 90 crore (pan India). The Lunchbox and Phata Poster Nikla Hero had a decent standing respectively with their 10-day collections, standing at Rs 33.5crore and Rs 16.55 crore. Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, `None of the new releases has been able to make its mark at the box office this week, which helped Grand Masti make its position stronger. Now all eyes are set on Krrish 3.`
According to exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Grand Masti has shattered all records previously held by adult films and has emerged as the highest grosser under this genre. Shahid Kapoor's Phata Poster however has not met with the expectations around the film. However, the film being a family entertainer will help its overall fate at the BO. The Lunchbox is a clear winner despite the lack of a star who can pull the masses into the theatres.
`Warning is a novel film that attempts to push the envelope when it comes to production values and technology but the lack of a star and a thumping promo have kept the film from taking off in a big way.` Distributor Sunny Khanna says, `Grand Masti will soon be joining the Rs 100 crore club.
The third weekend collections amounted to Rs 5.5 crore. Phata Poster Nikla Hero had a below average collection, considering its marketing budget and cost of production. The first 10-day collection of the film has amounted to Rs 33.5 crore. Khanna adds, `Warning was a disaster, collecting only Rs 2.65 crore. The movie failed to entice the audience into coming to the theatres.`
