In India, the film opened to extraordinary response in single screens. Trade analyst Vajir Singh attributes this to Akshay's enormous connect with the masses.
`Akshay Kumar is the all-round superstar. His fan following is unprecedented,` he says. The film, directed by Anthony D'Souza, is a quintessential commercial masala film. What's strikingly different about it is its slick treatment.
Shot across locations in Mumbai, Delhi and Thailand, the scale of the film is also one of its USPs. Says Anthony, `That was the intent. We wanted to tell an earthy story in the most stylish way possible. There's a very cool quotient attached to the film.`
Trade experts are attributing the opening of the film to Akshay's star charisma, the music that has already topped the charts (especially the Party All Night song) and the raw and real action. And of course, those who have seen the film are finding the emotional quotient (the relationship between the father and son) appealing too. Trade expert Taran Adarsh says, `'Boss' is sure to win you over. It's a paisa vasool entertainer.`
In the overseas market, 'Boss' has turned out to be Akshay's biggest opener. In the UK, the film was already in the Top 10 on the first day itself. In the UAE, it has shattered all previous records. In both the places, the film's collections were almost double of 'Rowdy Rathore'. This seems to indicate that the film has been well received by the classes as well.
Trade expert Komal Nahata says, `It's an enjoyable entertainer. It's not just great fare for the single screen cinemas but also the multiplex audience.`
