I go overboard with my fetish: Sonu Nigam

I go overboard with my fetish: Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam is busy as a bee. "Too many things are happening in my life - making music, singing, touring, socialising, meditation

I am simply enjoying this phase,` says he. Here are excerpts from an interview:

Turning musician
Sunny Deol's latest film is my first film as a composer. I had made music for my earlier albums but not films. There's a sweet co-incidence between Sunny and me. I was a child artist in his debut film Betaab, while my debut filmJaani Dushman-Ek Anokhi Kahani had Sunny as part of the project. When he heard the songs composed by me, he started crying.

Born to sing
My parents would sing on stage, so singing came naturally to me. But in our schooling days, we had to concentrate on studies. My friends adn I would play outdoor games like cricket, badminton and kho kho. Though we weren't rich, there was a strong bonding between family members and friends. I always loved to play musical instruments like the harmonium. As a kid, I couldn't afford to buy one and had to stay contented playing on tables and desks (smiles).

Selective about work
There was a time when I was recording 12-18 songs in a day. I was singing bhajans and ghazals as well as they gave me an opportunity to prove myself. I didn't even have the time to eat and I took pride in saying that to my mom. However, after a point, it became monotonous after a while. It was my bent towards spirituality that helped me. I have realised that I should not take myself too seriously as the reality may be completely different. I have become choosy about the kind of work I want to do and the kind of people I want to work with. Also, I have realised that one has to be respectful and humble towards people though not dependent on them.

Fetish for learning
I have this tendency to go overboard while I am learning something. My wife has seen me playing the piano in the middle of the night or waking up at two in the night to do yoga or going on a road trip all by myself. I am not much into planning as I don't want to be a slave to my aspirations. A few days ago, I took off on a road trip with my wife and son. It was an impromptu trip that we made without having a destination in mind. We drove along Gujarat, Chittorgarh, Udaipur. We had breakfast near the Narmada River in Indore. I had driven for almost 2,000 kms. The fun was in the spontaneity of the moment, we just went with the flow.

The small wonder
I share a special bonding with my son Nevaan. His looks and thoughts are quite similar to mine. Infact, so much that people call him my mini version (laughs).
