Ram Gopal Varma is remaking Ramesh Sippy's 1975 all-time blockbuster and he's going to start without delay.
The plan to remake the modern Indian film classic was long in the pipeline. Now after the unexpectedly large across-the-board success of "Sarkar", Varma has been further emboldened to enter another favourite territory.
"'The Godfather' and 'Sholay' have always been my absolutely favourite films. After I did one, I was tempted to do the other. Now I feel I've come full circle as a filmmaker," Varma said.
The nitty-gritty of doing an official and legally authorised remake of "Sholay" has been taken care of.
"Now I just need to absorb the immensity of the responsibility I've taken on," chuckled Varma, celebrating the success of "Sarkar" which, he claims, "he has already left behind".
Varma's remake of "Sholay" will be called "Ram Gopal Varma Ka Sholay" and the film will be trans-located from the Chambal ravines to Mumbai's underworld.
The film is likely to feature fresh faces.
"I wouldn't like to do the expected - I never have! By casting the children of the original cast, I'd be falling into a trap. My cast will be composed of faces the audience has never seen, or hardly ever seen," the director said.
Whoever finally features in the cast, one thing is for sure - any film that Varma directs after "Sarkar" will be avidly watched.
