The Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil has fallen in an unenviable situation where the state machinery has been accused of having served liquor to jailed Actor Sanjay Dutt.

Patil announced that the state government would investigate the allegations of actor Sanjay Dutt being provided alcohol in jail. Patil was responding to allegations made by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawade who had alleged that Dutt was served alcoholic beverages at the Yerawada Jail in Pune, where he is lodged on charges of his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Dutt had surrendered in a TADA court in Mumbai in May this year after the SC's verdict in the case. The court had handed over a sentence of six years in jail in 2007, which was later reduced to six years. The actor has served 18 months of his sentence and is serving the remaining 42 months.
