Model Rozlyn Khan was aghast when her accounts on Twitter and Facebook started getting inundated with messages from strangers asking to have sex with her, in exchange for payment. Over a fortnight later, the mystery was finally solved, when it emerged that a young woman who bears a resemblance to the model had been using her name to run a prostitution website.
The accused bore a resemblance to Rozlyn Khan, and decided to use that to her advantage
The 21-year-old woman, who resembles Rozlyn, created a website where she used a blurred photo and Khan's name, and started soliciting customers. As the website grew in popularity, Khan started receiving messages from her friends, asking her if it was indeed her photo on the website. Her accounts on social media networks also started being flooded with messages from prospective 'clients.'
Outraged and shocked, Rozlyn filed a complaint against the website with Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Sunil Paraskar, a fortnight ago. Paraskar asked the Goregaon police to investigate the case and file a report. The cops formed a team and contacted the website by planting a decoy customer, who asked for Khan's services. The accused readily agreed to offer her services, and fixed up a rendezvous near a swanky hotel in Goregaon.
The police reached the spot, and within minutes, the con artist arrived. For a second, all the cops were shocked by the uncanny resemblance between the complainant and the accused, but recovered quickly to arrest her. `We posed as a customer and called the number given on the escort service website. We bargained and a deal was fixed at Rs 50,000. We laid a trap in a Goregaon hotel,` said a police officer from Goregaon police station.
Meanwhile, Khan told MiD DAY that the ordeal has been traumatic for her. `Whenever I signed into my Twitter and Facebook accounts, I saw requests from people demanding to have sex. Many of my friends in Bollywood had started asking me about my ties with the website. This was tarnishing my image,` she said. Sources from Goregaon police station said that a team was set up under the guidance of a female police inspector to crack the case, adding, `Finally, we arrested the woman, while two others are absconding. We are investigating to see how long the website has been running. The accused was produced in court yesterday and has been remanded to police custody.
