Depp invented Wonka voice while playing with daughter
Johnny Depp says he invented the voice for the character of Willy Wonka while playing with his daughter Lily-Rose Melody.

Internet Movie Database quoted the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" star as saying: "A lot of times what happens is you come up with these ideas and you never get to try them until a read through. I often play Barbies with Lily-Rose. Sometimes I will put on an accent and she'll say, 'Daddy don't use that voice'.

"Then we were playing one day and I started to use my Wonka voice, and she kinda lit up a bit, like, 'Where's that coming from?' And I thought, 'All right, I think I'm on the right track here'."

Depp also said he auditions his future characters on his six-year old daughter because children always have the most honest reaction.
