Trend Talk: Bollywood's timeless trends making a comeback

Bollywood style statements that peaked in the good ol' 60s and 70s have been making a comeback off-and-on. Be it the ubiquitous Anarkali suit or blunt-cut bangs, vintage fashion seems to have caught the fancy of our top actresses. A sneak peek at some timeless trends...

Anarkali suit
The floor grazing, billowy costume that Madhubala aka Anarkali wore in Mughal-e-Azam has caught on like no other trend ever had. From the runway and big-ticket parties to random shindigs, these suits are all over the place. The best thing about an Anarkali dress is that it flatters most body types; the A-line cut lends a slimmer and elegant look to the wearer.

Bangs

Sadhana Shivdasani became a fashion icon for the modern Indian girl with her blunt fringes. The hairstyle came to be known as Sadhana cut. The 60s fashion fad has made a strong comeback. From Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor to Anushka Sharma now, a host of actresses seem to be in love with forehead-kissing bangs.

Flared pants

The 70s-inspired Bohemian fashion trend popularised by Neetu Singh is sweeping the world today. Call them bell-bottoms, palazzos or just flared pants, these wide-legged, high-waist trousers are so in demand. They are cool and classy, and accentuate a curvy feminine shape perfectly. This style is mostly meant for leggy lasses like Deepika Padukone.

Hippie

Zeenat Aman was a trendsetter in her own right. Her hippie-chic look in Hare Rama Hare Krishna - psychedelic shades, floral bell-bottoms and long skirts - inspired many young women in the 70s. Her sartorial statement has been emulated by the present crop of actresses both on and off screen. We have spotted Kareena Kapoor on at least two occasions trying to pull off the hippie look.

Polka dots

Immortalised by Dimple Kapadia in her debut film Bobby, polka dots are spot on as far as fashion trends are concerned. They have been in vogue for a long time and promise to live on forever. Feminine and flirty, the prints in various styles, sizes and colours fun up an ensemble. The black-and-white combo, however, remains a hit with one and all.

Cat-eye make up

This 70s style, which Bollywood beauties of the yesteryears swore by, is a rage among fashionistas. The winged eye make-up creates the illusion of bigger eyes and adds a dramatic element to one's looks. It is also quite Indian in essence. Sonam Kapoor recreated this retro look during her red carpet journey at the Cannes last year.
