Claiming it to be the first ever video pictures of India's most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, news channel India TV Wednesday showed him with film actor and Congress member of Parliament Govinda, but it was not clear when the footage was shot.
It was also not clear where the video was shot, but a much younger Govinda could be seen with an equally younger Ibrahim at what looks like the inauguration of a shop.
Ibrahim, wanted in India for many terrorist acts including the serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993, shifted his base to Dubai and later to Karachi in Pakistan.
Chhota Rajan, another underworld don, had later fallen out with Ibrahim. The video also showed Ibrahim's brothers Noora and Anees Ibrahim and other underworld dons Chotta Shakeel and Abu Salem.
The video had been provided to India TV by one of its viewers, the channel's Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma said.
Renowned director, Mahesh Bhatt tried to defend the actor saying that social interaction with a don is not a crime. Though, there may not be any criminal case against the Congress MP, the video will surely be an embarrassment to the Congress Party.
The Hero No 1 however terms it as a politically motivated campaign to tarnish his reputation.
"The tape has been released specifically at a time when I'm getting ready to campaign in UP with Rahul Gandhi. It sure seems like a pre-meditated move," he alleges.
According to him: "There were at least six other actors who were at the inauguration, but only my clips were shown. This proves that there is a political game plan behind the telecast on Wednesday. It is significant that Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, in his reaction to the telecast, spoke about my links with the Sonia Gandhi family."
Claiming that he had been a victim of underworld pressure himself, Govinda said he had performed in Dubai under pressure and had been cleared by the CBI, CID and the police way back in 1989.
"A chance meeting does not mean having links with Dawood. I am disturbed myself. I was just picked up and taken to perform for someone under pressure and then was not even given money," he rues.
BJP, however, today asked Congress President Sonia Gandhi to tell the nation what action she proposed to take against her party MP Govinda for his alleged links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim as revealed in a videotape.
"We would like Gandhi to tell the nation what action would be taken against Govinda for his relations with India's most wanted man," party spokesman Prakash Javadekar told the press.
Govinda was elected to Lok Sabha from Mumbai North in the 2004 elections when he defeated BJP heavyweight and former Minister Ram Naik.
