'Badlapur' a step towards commercial Hindi films

'Shor in the City' actress Radhika Apte, who is known for her roles in art house films, is looking forward to Varun Dhawan-starrer 'Badlapur' as she feels it will be an image-breaker for her.

Radhika made her full-fledged acting debut in Bollywood with 'Shor in the City' in 2011 but since then she kept herself busy in regional films and documentaries.

"I have done commercial movies in regional cinema but 'Badlapur' is my first Bollywood film after 'Shor...'. I am hoping my image of an art house movie actress will be broken by this film. I can't talk about my part because it is a thriller and the makers have kept it secret. But it is a very interesting character," Radhika told PTI.

The 29-year-old actress said she and Varun hit it off instantly and she learnt a lot from him.

"We both come from different backgrounds and have been typecast in different ways. He is known as a commercial actor while I am called a serious actress, so it was great that we both came along and learnt so much from each other.

"Varun and I are keen on doing all kinds of cinema. He is a passionate actor and it was amazing working with him," she said.

Radhika, who was last seen in Marathi film 'Lai Bhaari', opposite actor Riteish Deshmukh, said she wants to do both regional and Hindi cinema.

"A good film is a good film. Every movie is different irrespective of being in Marathi, Bengali or Hindi. I want to do all kinds of films but because I understand Hindi and Marathi, I would like to do films in these languages more.

That preference will always be there," the actress said.

Besides 'Badlapur', releasing on February 20, Radhika has a number of Bollywood films hitting theatres this year, including Ajay Devgn's maiden International co-production 'Parched' and 'Hunterr', produced by Anurag Kashyap.

"'Parched' is directed by Leena Yadav. I always wanted to work with a female director so I am happy that I was a part of the film. The role I have in 'Parched' is different from anything I have done so far while I feel 'Hunterrr' is going to be a very entertaining film," she said.

The actress, who took a two-year-old sabbatical from Bollywood in 2011, is quite happy with the way her career has shaped up and does not feel insecure by newcomers, who have made their name in the industry.

"My two-year course in London was already planned before 'Shor...' that's why I rejected all the film offers at that time and I don't regret it. There are many new actresses today but I don't care about their careers.

"My motive is creative satisfaction. I want to do as much good work as I can be it a documentary or a feature film. I want to be a part of good cinema. I am ambitious in the sense that I am never satisfied but I am not running after fame or money," she said.

Radhika admires actresses Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut as she feels they have taken risks in the male-dominated industry.

"I would really like to do something like what Kangana did in 'Queen' or Vidya in 'Kahaani'. Priyanka was great in 'Mary Kom'. 'Queen' and 'Kahaani' were box-office successes too. I think every actress would love to do such films," she said.
