'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' has fallen way behind in the box office race against Hollywood action-thriller 'Furious 7'. While the whodunit could not manage to draw crowds as expected, the latter seems headed to set a record as the highest Hollywood grosser - it has collected Rs 48 crore in just four days.
Exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says, "'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' has done a business of about Rs 14 crore so far and did not live up to expectations."
Trade analyst Amod Mehra adds that the opening of the Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer was "poor", but it improved on Sunday. "Being a period film, its budget is high. So the collections have to be steady to recover the cost. On the other hand, 'Furious 7' has broken all records of English films. The four-day weekend saw the film touch almost Rs 50 crore," he states.
Exhibitors are rejoicing at the increased footfalls in theatres. Vishal Anand of Fun Cinemas says, "Last weekend has been the best in this calendar year so far.
'Furious 7' has the potential to touch the Rs 100-crore mark. Its weekend ratio with 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' was about 65:35."
Trade analyst Komal Nahata says the opening of the Hollywood film on Thursday was much better than that of any A-list Bollywood movie. "While 'Furious 7' is set to create a new record, 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' will struggle to break even," he adds.
