Organised by the The International Indian Film Academy Foundation, the 25 over-a-side cricket match had Bollywood stars taking on a motley bunch of English players
including ex-cricketers, actors and even a singer. Conceptualized by Wizcraft International Entertainment saw a hard battle between cricket teams from India and United
Kingdom (UK) comprising superstars from the cine and cricketing world.
Donning the battle gear for IIFA XI were Indian film stars Suneil Shetty, Arbaaz Khan, Ashmit Patel, Mahesh Manjrekar, Madhavan, Venkatesh, Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab
Shivdasani, Rahul Dev, Uppen Patel, Usman and former India captain Mohamed Azharuddin.
For the Sports Relief XI team from UK artists from across the entertainment spectrum like teenage heart throb Jay Sean, Jake Humphrey, Chris Evans, Nick Knowles,
Dermot O'Leary, Harry Judd, Mark Chapman, Nick Hannock, Patrick Kielty and former English cricketers Phil Tufnell and Jack Russell fought hard with their lone woman
teammate cricketer Clare Connor. The Sports Relief team was coached by former West Indies cricketer Alvin Kalicharan.
The two teams were brought to the Brabourne Stadium in Victoria coaches driven by horses and were give a traditional welcome by Sonali Kulkarni dressed in a Navari Sari.
The unique toss between the two teams- The Tug-O-War was won by the IIFA XI. Judging the Tug-O-War were Indian leading ladies Sonali Kulkarni and Maria Goretti.
Mohamed Azzaruddin & Usman opened the innings for IIFA XI. Batting first IIFA XI scored a total of 229 runs, with top scorer Mohammed Azzaruddin putting a score of 64 on
the board. England were all out for 166!
Ashmit Patel got hurt during a batting partnership with Riteish and scored just 10 run before he was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to a hospital, where he was
given painkiller injections, and had an X-ray done.
Phil Tufnell from the Sports Relief took three wickets and 31 runners, making him the best bowler of the match, while Ritiesh Deshmukh was the Best Batsman with a total
of 48 runs in 36 balls. Aftab Shivdasani was the Man of the Match, repeating his brilliant performance from the IIFA Foundation Celebrity Cricket match in Amsterdam in
2005.
Current England captain Andrew Flintoff made a very quick visit to cheer the two teams and show support to the IIFA Foundation. Kicking of the contributions Mr. Vikram
Mehmi, CEO, Idea Cellular donated a sum of Rs. 20 lakhs to the IIFA Foundation. Also present to show their were Indian leading ladies Katrina Kaif and Amrita Arora.
