Departing from the previous directorial rosters, the third edition hands the reins to four acclaimed auteurs: Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiran Rao, Shakun Batra, and Vishal Bhardwaj.
Official Premiere Date & First-Look Poster
Announcing the release across social platforms, Netflix shared an intricate first-look poster framed beneath an arched floral collage:
“Desire, drama and dilemmas. Mark the date... Watch Lust Stories 3, out September 18, only on Netflix!”
The poster brings together its primary ensemble, featuring Ali Fazal and Aditi Rao Hydari under an umbrella, flanked by franchise returnees Radhika Apte, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Vijay Varma, alongside Siddharth, Radhika Madan, Abhishek Banerjee, Gurfateh Pirzada, and newcomer Sana Thampi.
The Four Segments & Cast Pairings
Continuing the franchise's framework, each 30-to-40-minute narrative is told from an independent perspective while exploring shared human impulses:
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Segment:
Motwane (Jubilee, Lootera, Udaan) directs an ensemble featuring Radhika Apte, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vijay Varma, and Abhishek Banerjee. The short marks a creative crossover, as Sen Sharma (who directed an acclaimed segment in Lust Stories 2) and Apte (who starred in Anurag Kashyap's segment in the 2018 original) return in performer capacities.
Shakun Batra’s Segment:
Known for his layered exploration of contemporary romance and infidelity (Gehraiyaan, Kapoor & Sons), Batra helms an intimate dynamic pairing Ali Fazal and Radhika Madan.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Segment:
Bringing his signature psychological weight and lyrical framing, Bhardwaj directs real-life couple Siddharth and Aditi Rao Hydari in a narrative exploring unsaid compromises and emotional boundaries.
Kiran Rao’s Segment:
Fresh off the widespread critical success of Laapataa Ladies, Rao directs a grounded, coming-of-age dynamic featuring Gurfateh Pirzada (Class, Call Me Bae) opposite newcomer Sana Thampi.
Writing Credits & Creative Philosophy
The writing credits for the four stories span a diverse lineup of writers, including Kiran Rao, Tanaji Dasgupta, Avinash Sampath, Sumukhi Suresh, Shakun Batra, Sameeha Sabnis, Ashwathi Namboodiri, Nitesh Bhatia, Utkarshini Vashishtha, and Vishal Bhardwaj.
Speaking on the franchise's enduring longevity, Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films at Netflix India, stated:
“What gives Lust Stories its enduring appeal is its ability to reinvent itself. Each chapter begins with a shared human impulse and arrives at a completely different emotional truth. Here, desire opens a window into power, vulnerability, agency, compromise, and the things people struggle to say aloud... Each film offers a distinct perspective, while leaving audiences room to form their own interpretations.”
Trade Verdict:
Positioning four celebrated filmmakers with strong, distinct cinematic languages—coupled with high-profile casting pairings like Siddharth–Aditi Rao Hydari and Ali Fazal–Radhika Madan—ensures Lust Stories 3 serves as Netflix India’s flagship OTT property for mid-September. The trailer is slated to arrive within the coming days ahead of the September 18 global premiere.
