“I Was Just Trying to Help,” Says Farhan
Speaking candidly on Aap Ki Adalat, Farhan Akhtar recalled the incident that took place on the first day of the Lakshya shoot in an Army cantonment. “It was my first film as a director, and everything on set had to run like clockwork. I was under immense pressure to finish the shoot on time. When Mr. Bachchan was taking a little longer with his performance, I simply wanted to check whether he was comfortable or needed any assistance. My goal was to make the process smoother for him and the team,” he explained.
Farhan added that his well-intentioned concern might have been misinterpreted: “It’s possible that he felt I was trying to guide him, which would naturally seem odd given his stature. I later realised how my approach might have come across and immediately apologised. My intention was never to instruct or teach — only to ensure efficiency on set.”
Amitabh Bachchan’s Emotional Recollection
Earlier, during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, Amitabh Bachchan had recounted the same incident, revealing how it made him emotional. “Farhan came to my room and asked if I was facing any problem. For a moment, I felt like a beginner being told how to act,” Big B shared. He even told his wife, actress Jaya Bachchan, about it, and she reportedly advised him, “If you’re not happy, come back.”
However, Amitabh Bachchan clarified that after that initial misunderstanding, the rest of the shoot went smoothly. “After that day, everything was fine. I enjoyed working with Farhan and the entire team,” he said, adding that the young director handled the project with remarkable confidence and vision.
Lakshya: From Box Office Underperformer to Cult Classic
Released in 2004, Lakshya starred Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles. Though the film didn’t perform exceptionally at the box office, it gradually achieved cult status for its inspiring storyline, patriotic tone, and memorable performances.
Set against the backdrop of the Kargil War, the film portrayed the journey of an aimless young man who transforms into a dedicated soldier. Over time, Lakshya has come to be regarded as one of Bollywood’s most realistic and emotionally resonant war dramas, often praised for its direction, cinematography, and powerful soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
Farhan Akhtar’s Upcoming Projects
Two decades after Lakshya, Farhan Akhtar continues to balance acting, directing, and producing with equal finesse. He will next appear in 120 Bahadur, where he portrays Major Shaitan Singh — a real-life hero of the Battle of Rezang La. The film, directed by Razneesh Ghai, also stars Raashii Khanna and Vivian Bhatena and is scheduled for release on November 21.
Farhan has also hinted at returning to direction soon, with fans eagerly awaiting news about Don 3, which is already making headlines for its casting choices.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Future Line-Up
Meanwhile, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan continues to anchor Indian television with Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, maintaining his unmatched charm and energy. On the film front, he is gearing up for Kalki 2898 AD Part 2, directed by Nag Ashwin. The sci-fi epic, starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, is expected to go on floors in December 2025.
Mutual Respect Prevails Between Two Generations
Despite the brief misunderstanding, both Farhan Akhtar and Amitabh Bachchan have demonstrated immense mutual respect and professionalism. Farhan’s humility in clarifying the incident only reinforces his admiration for Big B, while Bachchan’s gracious acknowledgment shows his warmth toward younger filmmakers.
The Lakshya episode serves as a reminder of the natural learning curve every artist faces — even when legends meet new-age storytellers. It’s a testament to how respect, communication, and shared passion for cinema bridge generational gaps in Bollywood.
