Selected under Film Bazaar 2023’s Viewing Room and Debut Director Co-Production Programme, the film follows Tara, a young woman who sets off on a solo journey to Switzerland, inspired by a romance novel she holds close to her heart. Away from the world she knows, she encounters Akash, a mysterious being from another realm. Their connection unfolds into a story that explores love beyond the boundaries of time, space and destiny.
Shot across locations including Lauterbrunnen, Montreux and Vevey in Switzerland, as well as Shimla in India, the film stars Alankrita Bora as Tara and Jitesh Thakur as Akash. The ensemble also features Amol Palekar, Deepti Naval and Brijendra Kala in key roles.
Speaking about the film, director Srinivas Abrol said, “The story of the film is quite different. It is not exactly a mainstream love story. There is magical realism, there is a quest and there are a lot of interesting elements that come together. It has been a one-of-its-kind cinematic experiment for us.”
Alankrita Bora added, “It’s beyond love, time, space and destiny, especially beyond realms. That’s where the title Tara & Akash: Love Beyond Realms comes from. It celebrates a kind of love that defies boundaries, and when you come across a story that is this unique and daring, you simply want to be part of it.”
Jitesh Thakur, who plays Akash, said, “Akash is a very unusual character, and playing him was a completely different experience for me. The film explores love, destiny and the idea of connections that go beyond what we understand. What drew me to the story was its uniqueness and the opportunity to be part of something that doesn’t follow the usual template of a love story.”
Amol Palekar said, “The film has a very unusual approach to love and relationships. It is not a conventional love story, and that is what makes it interesting. I enjoyed being part of a film that explores these ideas in its own distinctive way.”
Deepti Naval, who plays Devi, the guesthouse owner, said, “This is a lovely story. I liked this subject and felt that I wanted to work with younger people. There is a lovely group of youngsters in this, and I had a thoroughly great time working with them. If someone dares to take up such a subject, you want to be associated with it. And I love love stories.”
Brijendra Kala, who plays a philosophical character in the film, said, “It’s a different kind of cinema. I am playing a philosophical type of character, and I enjoyed it very much. I am very fortunate to get an opportunity to work with Amol-ji and Deepti-ji.”
