Javed Jaffrey Names Vyjayanthimala, Sridevi, and Madhuri Dixit as the Greatest 'India Wala' Dancers!
Having entertained audiences for decades across diverse dance styles, veteran performer Javed Jaffrey knows exactly what it takes to make a performance unforgettable. As he gears up for India’s Best Dancer Season 5, he recently looked back at the icons who, in his view, embody the true soul of “India Wala Dance”—a style deeply rooted in grace, expression, and Indian tradition.

When asked which names come to his mind when talking about authentic Indian dance, he immediately mentioned the iconic actresses of Hindi cinema. He stated, “If we talk about India Wala Dance, it goes back a long way. First Vyjayanthimala, then Sridevi Ji, Hema Ji, Madhuri Ji. For me, these are the ideal India Wala dancing ladies.”

Javed Jaffrey further explained that what set these legends apart was their ability to bring unmatched grace and authenticity to every single performance. He added, “When I recall truly graceful dancers, these are the names that instantly pop up. Later on, of course, Madhuri Ji and also Meenakshi Seshadri. For me, these are among the top dancers of Indian cinema.”

Javed Jaffrey also acknowledged the massive contributions of legendary performers like Helen and Cuckoo, who left an indelible mark on dance in Hindi films. However, when it comes to dance heavily intertwined with traditional Indian aesthetics and expressions, Javed believes that the names of Vyjayanthimala, Sridevi, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit, and Meenakshi Seshadri remain unmatched.

Shifting the spotlight to male performers, Javed Jaffrey highlighted the unique, standalone styles of Shammi Kapoor, Govinda, and Prabhu Deva. He remarked, “I absolutely loved Shammi Ji’s style. Govinda is adored for his desi flair and his ability to infuse his own personality into his dance, while Prabhu Deva possesses a rock-solid classical foundation alongside a beautiful mastery of Western styles.”

For Javed, exceptional dance is never just about clean technique; it is a fluid mix of personality, expressions, and the rare ability to connect with the audience. Making a grand return to the dance reality space, the veteran performer continues to draw deep inspiration from the legends who defined Indian dance on screen and set the ultimate benchmark for generations to come.

India’s Best Dancer Season 5 premiered on June 6 on Sony Entertainment Television and will be available for streaming on Sony LIV.
