Sunny Leone's "Blind Faith" in Anurag Kashyap: The Story Behind 'Kennedy'!
After a long three-year wait since its standing ovation at Cannes, Anurag Kashyap’s neo-noir thriller Kennedy has finally made its Indian debut on ZEE5 as of February 20, 2026.

While the film is being hailed for Rahul Bhat’s haunting performance, it’s Sunny Leone’s portrayal of the enigmatic Charlie that has the industry talking—specifically because of the "blind faith" she placed in her director.

"I Didn't Read the Script"

In a series of candid interviews following the premiere, Sunny revealed that she didn't follow the standard industry protocol for this project.

The Trust: Sunny confessed that she did not read the full script before saying yes.

The Reasoning: She stated that when a filmmaker of Anurag Kashyap’s caliber approaches you, the "script is secondary to the vision." Kashyap gave her a basic story outline and a deep dive into Charlie's psyche, which was enough for her to commit.

The Audition: Despite Kashyap telling her she was the only choice, Sunny insisted on auditioning. She wanted to prove to herself (and him) that she could embody the "high-pitched emotional vault" he had envisioned.

Becoming "Charlie": The Laugh That Haunted Her

The most striking feature of Sunny’s character is a peculiar, high-pitched laugh that serves as a shield for her insecurities.

The Challenge: Sunny admitted she had never laughed like that in her life.

The Prep: To make it natural, she practiced the "Charlie laugh" everywhere—in her car, at airports, and even in the middle of shooting a separate song with 150 dancers.

The Goal: She wanted to ensure that by the time she hit the Kennedy set, the laugh was a reflex, not a performance.

A Career Turning Point?

Having spent 15 years in the industry, Sunny is used to being told a film will "change everything." However, she feels Kennedy is the first time that phrase has actual "weight."Shifting Perception: The film showcases a "nocturnal, decaying" side of Sunny that is a far cry from her glamorous persona. The Collaboration: She described Kashyap as one of the "kindest and most supportive" directors, noting that he didn't change a single line of her dialogue once she was on set, trusting the preparation they had done in workshops.
