The reveal shows Deol sporting a salt-and-pepper beard, head bowed in contemplation while smoking a cigarette amid curling smoke. Directed by acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker M. Padmakumar and produced by Kamal Mukut alongside MM Moviez, the film is locked to arrive in cinemas on Friday, November 20, 2026.
The Character & Visual Tone: A Man Haunted by His Past
The first-look poster marks a conscious departure from Deol’s trademark larger-than-life avatars:
The Brooding Aesthetic: The close-up shot focuses on weathering lines, deep exhaustion, and an introspective gaze rather than aggressive bravado.
The Logline: Unveiling the motion poster on social media, Deol shared:
“Torn between Past and Present, He uncovers the TRUTH! Presenting SURYAA: Ant Se Aarambh Tak. IN CINEMAS 20th November 2026.”
Narrative Scope: The story tracks a retired investigator drawn into an intricate web of unanswered questions and buried truths. What begins as an informal query pulls him into a complex conspiracy tied directly to his personal grief.
Official Remake of 'Joseph' Helm by Original Director
Suryaa is the official Hindi adaptation of the 2018 Malayalam cult investigative thriller Joseph, which originally starred Joju George and earned widespread critical acclaim:
Directorial Continuity: Rather than handing the remake to a Bollywood director, producer Kamal Mukut brought back M. Padmakumar—the director of the original Malayalam feature—to helm the Hindi version.
Three Decades / Eras: Producer Kamal Mukut revealed that he had originally signed Sunny Deol for two back-to-back films: Gadar 2 and Suryaa. While Gadar 2 delivered massive box-office history, Suryaa is designed to present Deol across three distinct phases of the protagonist's life journey.
Ensemble Support: The cast features Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Jisshu Sengupta, Manish Wadhwa, and Tonushree Chakraborty.
Trade Take:
While remakes face inherent comparison tests in today's pan-India market, grounding Sunny Deol in a character-driven, melancholic investigative thriller offers a refreshing palette cleanser from loud actioners. Having original auteur M. Padmakumar at the helm ensures the core emotional weight and organ-trafficking investigative grit of Joseph are preserved intact.
