The actor breathed his last around 7:00 PM at Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital, where he had been admitted for the past 15 days after his health deteriorated. According to his son Mohsin Khan and business partner Shivam, Khan had originally been diagnosed with cancer five years ago and had recovered, but suffered an aggressive relapse in recent weeks.
His mortal remains are being taken for the final rites and funeral on Friday afternoon at the Yari Road Kabristan in Versova, Mumbai.

Speaking to the press, his son Mohsin Khan shared that until very recently, his father had remained active on film sets:
“He passed away due to cancer at Nanavati hospital at around 7 PM. He had complained of severe pain, so we took him to the hospital. His health worsened in the last few days. Prior to his hospitalisation, he was perfectly fine and had no major issues—he was actually shooting for the debut film of Shera's (Salman Khan's bodyguard) son.”
Filmmaker and close friend Ashoke Pandit expressed grief over the passing of a theater peer:
“Mushtaq and I were very old friends. We did theatre, plays, and TV shows together. He was an example for the industry—coming to Mumbai from a small town in Madhya Pradesh, passionate about craft, and being a genuinely warm human being. We lost Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, and now Mushtaq. One after the other, these losses are becoming difficult to bear.”
