The trailer has finally arrived for Ammonite, the upcoming romantic drama starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan as a pair of 19th century Englanders who fall in love by the sea. In the film, Winslet plays Mary, an ornery fossil hunter tasked with hosting a withdrawn young woman named Charlotte (Ronan), whose husband hopes that a quaint stay along the shore will cure her melancholia.
Ammonite, directed by Francis Lee, inspires almost instant comparisons to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Celine Sciamma's sumptuous 2019 drama about an artist who falls in love with a woman she's commissioned to paint. That film also includes all the classic hallmarks that Ammonite bears: quiet, subtle lesbian yearning, past century ennui, and wispy buns, all set to the dulcet sounds of waves crashing down on the beach. Watching the trailer is the cinematic equivalent of loosening your corset and staring longingly out the window, tracing your finger over the glass as you watch the sunset through the fog and think of the memories...oh, the memories.

Ammonite will very likely be part of this year's awards season narrative, with early (albeit premature) buzz surrounding both Ronan and Winslet. However, without any reviews out just yet, all we have is a single plaintive, romantic trailer to go on.
