Amid the Coronavirus pandemic and closed theatres, most of the Indian films are releasing on the OTT platforms. Even big production houses are taking the OTT route to release their films. As India is the second biggest OTT market after the US, keeping the thing in mind, many streaming giants are also investing and have brought the rights of big films. The Covid-19 pandemic saw a huge rise in the demand & consumption of digital content among the masses who are now watching newly released films at home. In the past six months, more than forty original films have been released on digital platforms and have set many records in the OTT world. Jyothika starrer Tamil drama film which revolves around a rookie lawyer who reopens a notorious 15-year-old case of a dead killer, alleged to have kidnapped and murdered young girls. The film was appreciated for its plotline and unexpected ending. Even the Hindi-speaking audience also enjoyed the film although it was only released in Telugu and Tamil languages on Amazon Prime. The film also became the first direct Tamil film to hit the OTT platform in 2020 and grabbed the tenth spot on most-watched Indian films on digital platforms.

The film was released on Disney+ Hotstar on Diwali eve and takes the eighth spot on most-watched films on the OTT.

Shoojit Sircar's comedy-drama film Gulabo Sitabo was released on Amazon Prime and it was among those original films which were released directly on the OTT as it was not released theatrically amid the pandemic. People want to watch Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan all together for the first time and after the release, it became the seventh most-watched film on the digital platforms.

Faruk Kabir's action-thriller film received the second-largest audience segment for Disney plus Hotstar after Akshay Kumar 'Laxmii' and 'Dil Bechara'. Amid the pandemic and lockdown, the makers sold the films right to the streaming platform. Vidyut Jammwal, Shivaleeka Oberoi, Annu Kapoor, Aahana Kumra starrer flick was loved by the audience and became the sixth most-watched film on the digital platforms.

Sharan Sharma's biographical drama film 'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl' starring Janhvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi became the fifth most-watched film on OTT. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was unable to release theatrically and was picked up for distribution by Netflix. Although, after the release, the Indian Air Force slammed the makers over the alleged undue negative portrayal of the IAF personnel. This controversy made the people watch the film and it also became Netflix's most-watched Hindi film.

As being one of the most-anticipated films of the year, within hours of release, Raghava Lawrence's horror-comedy flick broke all the records and became the biggest opener for Disney plus Hotstar. The film featured Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani in the lead roles. It was a remake of the Tamil film 'Kanchana'. Although, after the release, the film receives negative reviews from critics and the audience as well. Overall, the public excitement made Laxmii, the fourth most-watched film on the OTT platform.

Dil Bechara was a romantic film directed by Mukesh Chhabra starring the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. The film was based on John Green's 2012 novel 'The Fault in Our Stars'. It was Sushant Singh's last film as, on June 14, 2020, he committed suicide at his Bandra flat. His sudden death shocked the entire nation and the makers finally released the long-delayed film on Disney plus Hotstar in August month for free. The film gained millions of views due to the actor's sudden demise and became the No.1 film on the OTT platform.
