The glitzy world of Bollywood red carpets and award shows often projects an image of a tight-knit, glamorous family. But beneath the polished public relations veneer lie massive egos, fierce box-office rivalries, and explosive personal fallouts. When friendships rupture in the public eye, the gossip columns and trade circles buzz for decades. Here are 10 of the most shocking celebrity feuds and public fallouts in Bollywood history.
-
Shah Rukh Khan vs. Salman Khan
The Fallout: For years, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan ruled Bollywood as the ultimate fraternal duo. However, a bitter, highly publicized physical and verbal altercation at Katrina Kaif's birthday party in 2008 abruptly shattered their bond, leading to a legendary half-decade cold war where both superstars openly avoided each other at public events.
The Resolution: After years of cold shoulders, internet speculation, and separate camps, the duo famously buried the hatchet with a warm hug at an Iftar party, eventually supporting each other's cinematic universes with blockbuster cameo appearances. -
Kangana Ranaut vs. Karan Johar
The Fallout: What began as a sharp critique on a chat show snowballed into a permanent industry-wide ideological war. When Kangana Ranaut appeared on Koffee with Karan in 2017, she boldly branded the host the 'flagbearer of nepotism' right to his face, sparking raging national debates about insiders versus outsiders in Indian cinema.
The Legacy: The explosive exchange triggered years of ongoing public barbs, social media declarations, and polarized camps, fundamentally shifting how the media and public discuss star kids and industry access. -
Amitabh Bachchan & Rekha
The Fallout: The intense, crackling on-screen chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha during the late 1970s and early 80s spilled over into real-life tabloid speculation. Following the production of Yash Chopra's Silsila—which mirrored their real-life love triangle—the actors abruptly stopped working together entirely.
The Legacy: Decades of complete public silence and awkward avoidance at award shows have turned their quiet, dignified estrangement into immortal Bollywood folklore. -
Vivek Oberoi vs. Salman Khan
The Fallout: In 2003, a rising Vivek Oberoi called a sudden, late-night televised press conference claiming that a drunken Salman Khan had threatened him over the phone multiple times due to professional and personal disputes regarding Aishwarya Rai.
The Aftermath: The unprecedented public move backfired catastrophically. Vivek became an industry pariah overnight, finding himself frozen out of major studio productions and serving as a permanent cautionary tale about challenging powerful industry dynasties. -
Farah Khan & Shirish Kunder vs. Shah Rukh Khan
The Fallout: Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan were inseparable creative partners behind mega-hits like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. However, tensions boiled over at a crowded Mumbai nightclub in 2012 when an altercation broke out between SRK and Farah's husband, filmmaker Shirish Kunder, resulting in physical blows.
The Resolution: Realizing the friendship was too valuable to lose, industry heavyweights intervened, leading to a swift public apology and a triumphant reunion for the multi-starrer Happy New Year. -
Priyanka Chopra vs. Kareena Kapoor Khan
The Fallout: Early in their careers, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor locked horns in a legendary diva war. During respective appearances on chat shows, the two leading ladies traded sharp, thinly veiled remarks about their acting credentials, collegiate accents, and global aspirations.
The Resolution: Time heals all wounds. Years later, the two powerhouse actors successfully buried the hatchet, famously sharing the couch together on Koffee with Karan as mature, globally accomplished industry veterans. -
Sanjay Dutt vs. David Dhawan
The Fallout: Director David Dhawan and Sanjay Dutt were an unstoppable comedy powerhouse, collaborating on over 25 films including iconic 90s slapstick hits like Judwaa and Haseena Maan Jaayegi. However, their friendship collapsed when Dutt felt deeply betrayed that Dhawan failed to stand by him or visit him during his darkest legal troubles.
The Aftermath: Dutt openly voiced his bitterness in interviews, bringing a permanent end to one of the most prolific actor-director partnerships in Hindi cinema history. -
Arijit Singh vs. Salman Khan
The Fallout: Playback singing sensation Arijit Singh made a casual, sleep-deprived joke while accepting an award on stage alongside host Salman Khan. The comment deeply offended the actor, resulting in a tense backstage confrontation.
The Aftermath: The fallout had immediate professional consequences when Arijit's recorded tracks were systematically scrubbed from upcoming Salman Khan films. This prompted Arijit to post a public, emotional open letter on Facebook begging for forgiveness, making it one of the most transparent feuds of the digital era. -
John Abraham & Bipasha Basu
The Fallout: For nearly a decade, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu defined the gold standard of 2000s Bollywood fitness power couples. Their sudden, unceremonious split sent shockwaves through tabloid culture, fueled by rumors of infidelity and a strict code of silence from both camps.
The Aftermath: Following the breakup, the former couple completely avoided crossing paths at public events, red carpets, or industry parties, turning down lucrative joint film offers and closing the door on an entire era of romantic thrillers. -
Conclusion
Whether driven by professional jealousy, personal heartbreaks, or bruised egos on late-night talk shows, Bollywood feuds prove that life off-screen is often far more dramatic than any script.
