You never knows what may be a hit or what constitutes miss in the Business of Bollywood.
The Box Office has its own dynamics, quite separate from the expectations of the Producer and the cast and crew of the film.
Let's take a look at the movies that were expected to be hits, but bombed terribly!
-
Raavan
The initial box office collections of the Abhishek Bachchan - Aishwarya Rai starrer Raavan on day 1, was way below the mark.
In the big cities, the average collection of the first show was 50-60 per cent, whereas the initial in smaller places was in the region of 20-35 per cent.
-
Kites
The film had a fantastic opening weekend. It made about Rs.30.5 crores(305 million rupees) net and business at multiplexes was strong, but single screens saw large drops.
The film has cost its distributors a huge amount and the way the business had started slipping, they would incur heavy losses on this, and would certainly not be laughing their way to the bank.
-
Veer
Veer got off to a very strong start at single screens with 80-90% collections but multiplexes were dull with around 30-40% collections.
Performed exceptionally well at single screens in its opening weekend, while most multiplexes were dull from Day 1.
The shows had been reduced to one-third or one-fourth in its second week at plexes.
-
Prince
Upon release, Prince crashed at the box office. The film performed reasonably well during the first week upon its release.
However its business fell by around 80% in the second week, largely attributed to its huge price tag. The film was declared a flop by the box office India
-
Karthik calling Karthik
Karthik Calling Karthik performed moderately well at the box office, despite the presence of two other films - My Name Is Khan, which was running in its third weekend, and Teen Patti, which released simultaneously.
It grossed INR 27.5 million net on its first day of release. The film has done better at high end multiplexes enabling the film to have average collections on its first day.
-
Paathshala
The movie received a grand opening all over India. In Mumbai Cinemax, Fun Republic and Fame Adlabs, it received a good turnover on the opening day.
The film started slow but managed to pick at places on Saturday and remained steady on the lower side over the weekdays.
Although the film's second week was initially projected to earn more at the box office, earnings dropped 50% and the film was declared a 'Below Average'
-
Teen Patti
Teen Patti had a poor opening; Even Amitabh Bachchan's appearance could not help the film to go on. The movie was rated as a Box Office disaster in its first week.
The critical reception was extremely poor as well, receiving almost universally bad reviews.
-
Chance Pe Dance
Directed by Ken Ghosh; Cast; Shahid Kapoor, Genelia D'Souza. Chance Pe Dance had a lukewarm start in the domestic market.
The morning and noon shows ranged from 15% to 25%. The opening has come as a rude shock to the producer and players in the film.
