India's first sex toy shop that was opened with much fanfare in Goa last month was forced to shut operations after the local panchayat raised objections to "such activities".
Kama Gizmos, the first brick and mortar sex toy shop in India and Goa, was inaugurated around Valentine's Day this year in Calangute.
However, a month later, Kama Gizoms was asked to down its shutters by the local panchayat that raised an issue with the license of the sex toy shop and also against its contents, reported The Indian Express.
India's first offline sex toy and sexual wellness store was opened as a joint venture between KamaKart, a chain of sexual wellness stores and Gizmoswala, an online sex toy store.
According to the report, although the local authorities raised an issue with the sex toy shop's license, Kama Gizmos partner Prawin Ganeshan has said the issue runs "deeper".
The report quoted Calangute Sarpanch Dinesh Simepuruskar saying that they have received verbal complaints from locals about the shop that is located at a marketplace in the popular tourist hub of Calangute.
The sarpanch said they received complaints about the shop not having a proper trade license and hence it was shut down on Wednesday and its hoardings and signage were also removed.
"They were selling sex-related things and we had received complaints from both men and women about it. People had also posted on social media and WhatsApp about the shop. Since it was in a gully everyone had not seen it before," the Calangute sarpanch told Indian Express and added, "We don't want to allow such activities."
KamaKart authorities have however said that license for the sex toy shop is under process and thus they were asked by the panchayat authorities to shut shop for a few days. However, they have alleged that they are being targeted as they are outsiders and not locals from Goa. The shop owners are still hopeful of reopening Kama Gizmos in a months' time.
