Nomadland won big this year. The film won Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloe Zhao. Chloe is the second woman to win this year in the Academy's 93 years of giving awards.
Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Mank, Soul and Sound of Metal - all won two Oscars each at the ceremony.
Despite the year that was driven by a global pandemic, the films that dominated the award ceremony were quite impressive. Many of these released either in film festivals or streaming platforms.
The Oscars this year were historic at several levels - for one, it boasts the most diverse list of nominees in the history of the Academy Awards; for another, in addition to the traditional venue of Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre, much of the ceremony is taking place at Union Station. This year, the categories of Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing have been consolidated into a single Best Sound award. Also, there is no host for the award ceremony for the third year running.
In the 'In Memoriam' section of the 93rd Academy Awards, actor Irrfan Khan and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya were honoured. The two legends passed away in 2020.
